spaced [Nov. 10th, 2009|02:16 am]
so i'm watching spaced* on dave. i spotted a trailer for it a couple of nights back and made a point to watch it. the fact that i already own the complete dvd box set and thus can watch it any time i like is neither here no there. what can i say? i prefer to watch stuff on tv...

anyway, spaced. yes. an excellent show. if you don't already own the dvd go buy it. if you haven't seen it go buy it. or download it. it's your call.

i was gonna go on about why i like it, how it had dozens of little almost 'in' jokes and it felt like i was in on them... anyway...

oh, i've added a few more snaps to the 'starfury- fusion' set on flickr.

SF-Fusion_set#02-01
this one of my favorite snaps so far, partly because it's a nice photo but also because what you see here is pretty much exactly what's on the negative- i didn't need to do any editing to it whatsoever. okay, so i dialed in about 48º unsharp mask but that was it. i took in on the EOS 3 film slr with a 20mm sigma lens, one of my favorite full frame lenses ever. i'd say that the EOS 3 was a better camera than the EOS 1 because it had almost all the same features but was a bit lighter and way cheaper. great camera. i sold it when i got the EOS 10D.

*best bits from season 2, btw...
... and is it just me or is the woman cyclist her out of doll house?

earlier this evening i was watching "the abyss", probably the finest torchwood episode yet made imho. guaranteed to have me in tears every time.

it's cold in this house. it should be in here, comfortable, it's the middle of summer and quite warm. at work it's currently piping, far hotter than outside. here it feels cooler than outside. when i get home i take my shoes off and i can feel the heat being sucked from my feet through that thick carpet. it's almost as if there's somekind of heat sink under the floor, it's crazy! and in the winter... now i know why my gas bill was bigger than i expected.
which reminds me, i need to phone up npower and sort out my new payment strategy...

i envy my lovely american friends who are unhappy with the heat. heat i like. i can cope with it. heat was never a problem for me. the cold, however bothers me. i wish i was in a position to go south for the winter but due to a shortfall in cash i can't do this.
aaand like so many things in life it comes down to money. or the lack of it. i need to get off my arse and start selling my photography skills. buy a print anyone? (i really should add some more photos...)

i'm watching wallander at the moment. since last week this show is tinged with a hint of sadness...
in retrospect linda wallander now does seem to be a fairly unhappy woman, frustrated, a bit angry even. or that could just be me seeing the character differently in the light of johanna sallstrom's passing.
coincidentally, in this ep linda is pissed- man trouble. stefan, her work colleague, house mate and (maybe) boyfriend did the dirty on her. she found out while they were working a case together. there was a bit of a to do...
he's quite a looker, no?

this is Paul, owner of the place i work. i took it with the OM-4 using Ilford HP5 b&w film a couple of months ago. it was the first time i'd manually developed a film for years.

this i found very interesting.

this is one of the responses he got, which i pretty much agreed with.
here's what his girlfriend had to say about it...

i don't know about you but even just seeing an advertising banner appear on the screen while watching youtube is annoying enough but to have a commercial break during a four minute video? are they kidding?!

i came across this on the 'tube...

... so if you liked transformers 2 then move along, nothing for you ere. if you didn't like it then i think you'll agree with these guys...

warning: contains spoilers...! )

despite agreeing with almost everything they said, i still quite liked it. tho the sfx were brilliant...

while on the subject of giant robots, isnt it about time they (hollywood) made a live action version of this? the robots are just as exciting and the story is way, way better...

*not for the first time... ;)

"frankie say... relax"
i never had the t-shirt, just the single. and, eventually the album. however, when i bought the single at morrisons supermarket (during the weekly shop cos us kids were needed to carry the load back home...) it, the record came in a plain black paper sleeve with a hole in the middle so you could see and read the label on the record and know what you were buying. i didn't realise there was a picture sleeve until a week or so later (probably at morrisons when they re-stocked... gits...)

i believe this was the 'safe' video, certainly it's the one i we saw on top of the pops. i liked the lasers. they were exciting and 'modern'. oh yeah...

wile researching this post, i discovered there was a another video for this song that i was unaware of (i certainly don't remember it)
it reminds me of '80's american 'art'- ish films such as... well only "leibestraum" comes to mind but it features the music of the title being played rather brilliantly* by allicia witt.

as you may remember the record was supposedly banned by the bbc thus rocketing it to the number one spot in he singles chart. as i understand it the bbc never officially banned it, a particular dj (can't remember which) decided that he wasn't going to play 'this filth" and, it seems, the bbc backed him up on it. or something like that...
whatever, trevor horn must have been pretty pleased with the result as were frankie goes to hollywood no doubt tho, apart from the vocals frankie had little to do with the final song as almost all the music was the result of performences by three different session bands (including ian dury's band, trivia fans) and amalgamated to produce what you hear here.
i like trevor's work. he even produced tatu's chart topping single, you know... and he was the buggles. sami k seems to have a penchant for his glasses... ;)

*well i think so

what a day what a day what a daaaaay!!! if i knew today was going to be like today i'd have gone to bed early last night and had a decent breakfast this morning.
dave, my boss, is off to france tomorrow for ten days. which means the lab, which was funtioning perfectly yesterday was having problems this morning. it wasn't printing. that's not true. it was unable to transport paper around the unnecessarily complicated bit at the bottom of the machine. we fiddled with it for hours thru interruptions from customers. we were baffled by why the mechanism was unable to transport the paper round the corner. so we gave in and phoned mark evans, he's a dude who used to work for san marco, the very ex-company that made the machine and knows all about it from an engineering standpoint. hearing the symptoms he pointed us to the little rollers that it kept throwing. at least two of them had seized up. a little wd40 was enough to free them up. except the other one which was nearly impossible to get to because i haven't got tiny spider like fingers being a 'normal' humanoid after all... ;)
anyway, after buying a long thin driver and suitable attachments and fetching a couple from home i get it going.
of course by now it's 3:40pm and we still haven't eaten anything...

i was going to buy myself a chinese, i'm in no mood to cook but lemon tree, the take-away is closed today :(
oh well...

teenage hits [Jun. 21st, 2009|12:35 am]
"dear john" by status quo.

this was the first single i bought, and the second record i ever bought (the first being "12 gold bars" by status quo).
i wasquite keen on the Quo back then, and i remember i got very excited when they released their 20th anniversary three disc box set "from the makers of...". i wanted the limited edition tin box
but it was expensive and mum and dad said no, it's too expensive. i think it was over £20 and in 1982 that was quite a wad. i had to make do with the regular (and slightly cheaper) cardboard box version with a picture of the blue tin box on the cover.

good times...

congregation [Jun. 20th, 2009|06:57 pm]
this afternoon i handed over a couple of sample snaps of this photo.

congregation-01

i don't mind telling you that i'm quite proud of this, actually, it turned out quite well. there's a whole lot more to do, mainly processing and putting together the final collection from the shoot on disc with a few prints in a sampler album.
now follows the hardest part of doing a job (for me), that's waiting for the cheque!

disc film

in the mid-80's we (my sister and i) talked our parents into buying a kodak disc camera. despite the fact that the neg area was nearly than half the size of 110 film, the cameras were unreliable and overly expensive they still fell for it.
it was an exciting piece of technology when it first appeared but the novelty soon wore off and people remembered that 35mm compacts were cheaper and way better and like some of kodak's 'brilliant' ideas disc* film vanished a few years later. even 110 is still around.
just...

*i'll bet some of you reading this have never heard of disc film... ;)

this evening i discovered that one if my flickr contacts is in a band...
not the best singer i've ever heard but she's french, from paris, no less so already she's got that mystique thing going on...

so, anyway... yesterday. quite a good day, as it happens. did my usual friday afternoon leeds walk, popped into hmv to see what i could spend my £5 xmas gift voucher on. i looked at some anime but all the good stuff they either didn't have or was over £15 so that was out. then i remembered "pans labyrinth"- so off to the world cinema shelf. where i found and bought "the city of lost children", a movie i've been passively searching for for years...
... and it was only £7...

on my way out of the store i bumped into yara*, a convention friend i haven't seen since... wow, must be nearly five years...!
we first met at end of days in blackpool.
i miss my friends...

i was on tea-making duty last night at camera club...

... and today, out with the old

and in with the new
IMG_9810-new

yes, i bought an electric espresso** coffee pot. isn't it cute?

*sometimes i wish she was scandinavian so i could call her yara viking...
**i used to say expresso... but, as paul pointed out, that (probably) sounds like i'm talking about an italian newspaper... ;)
